(ii) Write a note on good practices towards conserving forest and wildlife.
Answer:
The Joint Forest Management (JFM) programme in India is an excellent illustration of how local communities can be involved in the management and restoration of degraded forests. The first resolution for joint forest management was passed by the state of Odisha in 1988, marking the official start of the programme. In order to carry out protection efforts primarily on degraded forest land under the management of the forest department, JFM depends on the establishment of local (village) institutions. Members of these communities are entitled to intermediate benefits in exchange, such as non-timber forest products and a portion of the timber harvested through “successful protection.
” Local communities everywhere must be involved in some form of natural resource management, as is evident from the dynamics of both environmental destruction and reconstruction in India. However, there is still a long way to go before local communities are the primary decision-making stakeholders. Only approve business ventures or developmental initiatives that prioritise people, the environment, and the bottom line.
