  1. Answer the following questions in about 120 words.

(i) Explain the land use pattern in India and why has the land under forest not increased much since 1960-61.

Answer: Both natural elements—such as topography, climate, and types of soil—and human factors—such as population density, technological prowess, culture, and customs—determine how land is used. Between states, there are significant differences in the net sown area pattern. In Punjab, it makes up more than 80% of the total area, while in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, it makes up less than 10%.

The nation’s forest area is much smaller than the intended 33 percent of the land area, as stated in the National Forest Policy (1952).It was thought to be crucial for preserving the natural equilibrium. Wasteland is the term for a portion of the land used for other non-agricultural purposes, such as roads, railroads, industries, and settlements. There are desert, rocky, and arid regions in it. Degradation of land is the outcome of long-term, continuous use without the necessary conservation and management actions.
