Chapter 5- The Happy Prince
NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Moments English Chapter 5 The Happy Prince .Oscar Wilde’s short story “The Happy Prince” was first released in 1888. It’s a moving story that looks at sacrifice, kindness, and what true happiness is all about. The Happy Prince in the tale is a statue positioned high above a city and decked with priceless diamonds and gold leaf. From the outside, he appears to have it all, but the pain of the underprivileged in the city below moves him deeply.
1. Why do the Courtiers call the prince ‘The Happy Prince’? Is he really happy? What does he see all around him?
Answer: The prince’s courtiers called him “the Happy Prince” because he was always happy. Since he was living in a palace where it was illegal to be sad, he had no notion what tears were when he was alive. But after he passed away and was transformed into a statue, he was not pleased with himself and shed tears upon witnessing the destruction of his city. From his vantage point, he could see all the misery and depravity of the city.
2. Why does the Happy Prince send a Ruby for the seamstress? What does the Swallow do in the Seamstress’ house?
Answer: The seamstress, unable to feed her feverish kid, was in extreme poverty when the Happy Prince gave her a ruby. Persuaded by the prince, the swallow went to the seamstress’s home. The woman had fallen asleep, so the swallow kept the ruby on the table where she worked. The boy’s forehead was briefly touched by his wings as he circled the bed. The child felt more at peace as a result, and he eventually went asleep.

3. For whom does the Prince send the Sapphires and why?
Answer: The Happy Prince sent the sapphires for two people: the match girl and the young writer who lived across town. The young playwright was trying to finish a piece for the director of the theatre. He was too chilly to write any more, the grate was empty of fire, and hunger had driven him into unconsciousness. He handed the young playwright the sapphire so that he could finish the play, buy firewood, and sell it to a jeweller.
Then the Happy Prince looked down into the square and saw a small match girl standing directly beneath him. Her matches were all ruined since she had dropped them in the gutter. The Prince knew full well that her father would beat her if she did not bring home some money. After the swallow laughed and placed the pearl into her palm, the little girl rushed home, happy.
4. What does the Swallow see when it flies over the city?
Answer: As it soared over the city, the swallow observed the stark contrast between plenty and destitution. It portrayed affluent men having a good time without considering the plight of the underprivileged people on the street. When police officers on the streets deprived the impoverished even a decent night’s sleep, their predicament reached a breaking point.
5. Why did the Swallow not leave the Prince and go to Egypt?
Answer: Since his two sapphire eyes had been taken away by the price, he had become blind. The swallow decided to stick by the prince forever as a result. It’s likely that the swallow decided to stay rather than take a plane to Egypt to be with his friends because he was so touched by the prince’s kindness. This suggests that those who are good-hearted always seem to draw lifelong friendships.
6. What are the Precious Things mentioned in the story? Why are they precious?
Answer: The narrative lists the dead bird and the leaden heart of the happy prince as valuables. The reason they are significant is that the swallow and the joyful prince were both nice, giving, and selfless. The prince gave away all of his priceless jewels and riches to make his people happy because he could no longer stand to witness the ugliness, misery, and suffering of his city. In a similar vein, the swallow declined to travel to Egypt in order to act as the prince’s messenger, bringing happiness and rare stones to the underprivileged.
Despite the fact that the prince was blind, he never gave up on him, even as the winter months got closer and the temperature dropped. When he could no longer withstand the cold, he passed away at the foot of the monument, and the statue loved him so much that its leaden heart broke in two. Because of this, when God asked one of the angels to bring him the two priceless items from the garden, the angel brought him the dead bird and the leaden heart. God answered, saying that the Happy Prince would exalt God in the city of gold, and the little bird would sing eternally in his garden of Paradise.
